Power Tool Battery Care

Chances are, most of you have at least one or two power tools around your home. They are great for both small and large projects and make many tasks much easier due to their power and portability. However, a power tool without power is really no tool at all and will be of little use to anyone. Yet many power tool batteries lose their power due to improper care and the somewhat costliness of replacement power tool batteries causes a lot of power tools to lie dormant. That being said, here are some useful tips for keeping your power tool batteries in the best possible condition to ensure that you’re not left scratching your head next time you need to use your power tool.

First off, most power tool batteries are made up of several smaller cells packed inside the battery casing. These cells are predominantly NiCD, meaning that the same rules for all NiCD batteries apply here as well. These batteries have a tendency to develop a memory effect. In order to ensure that your power tool battery doesn’t lose a significant amount of its runtime, it is important to practice smart charging behavior. Power tool batteries should be power cycled (fully discharged and fully charged) at least once every few weeks to guard against the memory effect.

Have you ever stored a car or lawnmower for the winter and tried to start it a few months later only to find that the battery is dead? The same will happen to a power tool battery if not properly maintained. This is probably the number one killer of power tool batteries today, especially for those that only use their tools for odd and end jobs every now and then. If the battery is not taken from storage and charged/discharged occasionally, it will certainly fail to function when you need it. When you do store power tool batteries, make sure to store them in a dry, cool, clean place away from metal and heat. Never store power tool batteries on the charger, as this will overcharge the battery and also diminish its runtime.

Many people use power tools in some pretty rough places, such as construction sites, mechanic shops, and landscaping areas. This means that power tool batteries often become dirty and should be cleaned to keep them working correctly. To ensure that dirt doesn’t interfere with the battery connections and cause the tool not to function normally, clean the battery contacts with some alcohol and cotton swabs.

If you do have a power tool battery that no longer takes a full charge or simply will not function at all, it may be time to consider having the battery rebuilt. The rebuilding process involves opening the battery casing and replacing the smaller individual cells inside with new rechargeable cells. This process often costs much less than the price of a new battery and most batteries can even be improved by using higher capacity cells which allow the battery to last longer in between charges.

You don’t want to keep your useless tools in your storage right? You will only fill up the room with broken tools, so you feel you want to throw everything out. Wow, that’s really a good way to throw out money.

Try not throwing out your tools from the storage by fixing and maintains it properly. Even if it is not broken, maintaining your tools is one way to help you having long lasting equipment. What ever it is, tools are so significant for you to have and has been used since stone era.

Britannica Encyclopaedia said tools began perhaps a million years ago when man learned to walk erect. His hands were then free to grasp objects of wood and stone. He used these to kill animals for food, and they became the first tools. All tools have vast advantage. It’s really amazing how those tools helping people to do their everyday life. You will be lured to own your set of tools too.

Not just keen to buy, but maintaining is also important. The better a tool works, the less you’ll have to use your energy to do the work. Tools that are in good working order will last forever. Maintenance tasks are easy to do and typically for garden tools are required only once a year. If the tasks are done at end of the season, the tools are ready to use when the season starts, and they are better protected from corrosion during storage.

Before your start keeping your tools, let’s check these checklists:

• After you use your tools, and you expect to use it again in a long run by keeping it in the storage, better you replace blades or sharpen tools that cut or dig, lubricate moving parts and oil materials that tend to dry out.

• When a repair is not a safe option, replace the broken parts before you keep your tools in the storage. Don’t try to glue or tape a broken wooden handle.

• Before you start fixing your tools, gather all your tools to assess the damage or maintenance needs on the worktable that already cover with newspaper, so it will not be dirty from dirt and oil.

• Write down which tools need to be fixed and which one only needs to be maintained.

• You should wear heavy gloves for your work. Files rough-sharpen digging tools and to sharpen nicked or very dull cutting tools; sharpening stones are required to hone and maintain sharp edges on cutting tools.

• If a metal file doesn’t have an integral handle, buy a handle for it. The tool will be much safer to use for the next work. Better you keep it diligently.

It’s really amazing how those tools helping people to do their everyday life, especially when your tools are maintained very careful.

Carbide cutting tools

Carbide cutting tools are tools that have the end of the tool, or the tip, coated with carbide, and is used to make cuts through some of the toughest materials known. So, how did we arrive at the place where carbide was invented and the use became so widespread? Well, carbide was a derivative of hard metal. Until the turn of the century, and the onset of the industrial revolution, hard metal was the best the industry had to offer.

Unfortunately, the best the industry had to offer wasn’t all that good. Scientists and metal workers had already devoted a great deal of time to the creation of a harder substance, when, along came carbide. What scientists and metal workers discovered, was that if you decrease the iron (Fe) with harder carbide substances, you got a harder cutting tool.

A metal known as tungsten carbide was introduced into the market during the 1920s and you have the invention of carbide cutting tools. The industrial world was rapidly changed, and as you can see, today we have benefited greatly from this discovery.

Along with the introduction of carbide cutting tools, came the industrial revolution and although there was some modification of machinery, the industry was welcoming this new tool with open arms. The hotter the cutting process, the harder the cutting tool needed to be, and with the progress of machinery, tools, and man’s hunger for automation, the carbide tool filled a much needed space.

The hard carbide particles most often used in carbide cutting tools are those of tungsten carbide, titanium carbide and tantalum carbide grains. The carbide cutting tools are made by using a metallurgical powder, pressing it into a die, and then heating it in a furnace to a temperature of at least 1400 degrees Celsius. That’s extremely hot, but carbide is extremely tough!

Most all saw blades are carbide tipped, except for some specialty saw blades like thin kerf plywood saw blades.

What is so great about carbide tipped saw blade or router bit?

Tungsten carbide is an extremely hard metal that holds its profile and edge much better than any of the high speed steel alloys. It is also very brittle.

How can I tell if a saw blade is carbide tipped?

Look at the tips of the saw blade if the tips have a darker square metal on the ends that is slightly thicker a than the saw blade body, it is carbide tipped.

How to identify carbide tipped router bits.

Carbide router bits have a steel body with the carbide metal being attached to the cutting face of the router bit. The carbide will run the length of the cutting face of the router bit. It will also extend about a 1/16 of an inch beyond the steel body. The carbide plate is typically about 1/8 of an inch thick.

Over the past few years there has been a lot of controversy over whether to use a carbide graver over a steel graver. Often the incorrect grade of tungsten carbide is used when manufacturing carbide gravers and therefore their quality is undermined. Should the correct grade of carbide be chosen there is no reason you should ever have to use a steel graver again.

Tungsten Carbide has proven over many years to be a reliable and effective material to manufacture cutting tools. The main reasons for its superior performance is that extreme hardness can be achieved and Tungsten Carbides ability to continue to retain its properties, even when glowing red hot. Some knowledge of the material is required in order to select the correct grade for the application required. Tungsten Carbide is a brittle material and care must be taken to avoid damaging the cutting edge by chipping - this is where the correct grade selection is most important to offer a material that will perform well in the task and resist wear for repeated operations. A great deal of time needs to be taken in testing various grades of Tungsten Carbide to obtain the optimum grade for use with carbide gravers.

In the main, performance is subject to the material hardness/toughness relationship and this can be varied by adjusting the materials used for the powder production of tungsten carbide. Hard particles of Tungsten Carbide can be produced in a range of grain sizes the smaller the grain size the harder the TC alloy will be. The other main constituent part is the cement that holds the TC particles within the structure and this is usually the metal cobalt, by adjusting the amount of cobalt in the structure this can have an effect of increasing the toughness as the cobalt amount increases.

Summing up tungsten carbide can be adjusted in hardness, toughness by varying the amount of cobalt and the grain size of the TC particles. This will give a wide range of adjustment in hardness, from about 800 vickers hardness up to in excess of 2,500 vickers hardness. With this large variation in hardness/toughness available it can be seen that there is plenty of scope for an inappropriate grade of carbide to be supplied for use as a carbide graver.

If the correct grade is chose of tungsten carbide then here are the top five benefits of carbide gravers achieved over steel gravers:

1. Carbide Gravers will last 100 times longer. This means they work out being cheaper over the long run.

2. Carbide Gravers cut even the hardest materials. You are not limited with what you can cut, even high grade watch staffs, French clock arbors etc which steel gravers cannot touch

3. Far superior finish transferred on to your work. Maintains a much higher level of polish which is transferred onto your work.

4. Carbide Gravers stay sharper longer. Resulting in more time working and less in resharpening.

5. Cut Quicker with less effort. Some people have described as cuts like "a knife through butter"

A new metal carbide Fischer-Tropsch (FT) catalyst developed by Oxford Catalysts looks set to make second-generation biofuel production using small-scale FT microchannel reactors environmentally and economically viable.

The catalyst was produced using Oxford Catalysts' patented organic matrix combustion (OMX) method, which makes it possible to achieve high metal loadings, while at the same time precisely controlling crystal sizes. The result is a cobalt-based catalyst of the ideal crystal size to provide the optimum level of activity in a microchannel reactor.

The FT reaction is a key technology for producing second-generation biofuels from agricultural waste. Because it takes one tonne of biomass to produce one barrel of liquid fuel, small-scale Fischer-Tropsch reactors are being developed to convert the waste on a distributed basis locally rather than at large collection centres. Microchannel reactors are potentially the best candidates for this job because they enable more efficient and precise temperature control, leading to higher throughput and conversion. They are also able to dissipate the heat produced from the FT reaction more quickly than conventional systems. But to work efficiently, microchannel reactors require an FT catalyst with a high level of activity in order to boost the conversion rates to an economic level. The new FT catalyst developed by Oxford Catalysts fits this bill exactly.

Following several thousands of hours of rigorous testing, Oxford Catalysts has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with a leading developer of small scale FT microchannel reactors to deploy the new catalyst in small-scale FT applications, including the conversion of bio-waste or flare gas into liquid fuels.

Derek Atkinson, Business Development Director, Oxford Catalysts says:

"We have spent 12 months working on developing this particular catalyst, using our state-of-the-art equipment and our patented OMX method, and are very pleased with the results. The next stage will involve working closely with a catalyst producer to supply tonnage quantities for use in demonstration units. "

Silicon Carbide
Prices of silicon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon carbide, a material for solar wafer cutting, have jumped sharply since last year, as China, the biggest supplier, has imposed export quotas on the material, according to industry sources.Silicon carbide http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbide prices now stand at $4.8-6.4 per kilogram the sources said.

Tungsten carbide vessels containing materials at high temperature and high pressure are used in many laboratories. We note that any oils at medium to high temperature which can break down and liberate hydrogen cause rapid failure of the pressure vessel, whereas perfluorated kerosenes used as lubricants inside a pressure vessel give sharply increased life of the vessel. Short of calcium carbide.

Price of calcium carbide in domestic market continued to surge in July, reaching RMB4 600/t on average in mid-July, an increase of 16.48% over the proceeding month. It may touch a higher on the support of energy, feedstock and transportation constraint. As for polyvinyl chloride manufacturers those use calcium carbide as raw materials, such a high calcium carbide price is hardly afforded while the price of polyvinyl chloride nearly remained unchanged in the first half. High cost forced these polyvinyl chloride manufacturers cut down their feedstock inventories and operation rates.

High inflation may be the main reason of short supply. Coal price rocketed, resulting in a power deficit, then the calcium carbide producers run well below the full capacity and some producers in northern regions started to repair their facilities. Prices of oil products and freight went up, along with the government controlling the delivery and production of dangerous chemicals, causing the supply deficit.

Current music: The Center

In the Twelfth hour of the Age of Dissension,
None will stand
And Greed will the islands the raise the oceans
The Rise of Man will be premature
The Black Rider will come disguised as power
And salvation will be at hand on the Holy Son's breath
Closed shall be the eyes of vengeance
As HIS hand frees the light for the Scorned Gift
The Savior will cry out as he is reborn in a white fire
Released in the name of war to extinguish innocence
Crows will sing a song of blood as the children burst forth
And the love of the weak proves not enough
The Powerful and Poor will join lips as tongue forlorn
Behold, as the Lost will carve a road with Mother's Hands
And the Sun will shone forth with all the warmth of HELL,
To strip all of VANITY and GLUTTONY
On the Year of Collection, four TEMPESTS will be sent:
The Heartless
The Cure
The Veil
And The Halcyon
Many will come but choices are endless
Send not those back whence they came
But pass them on to the Homecoming
Your last Fire will be the CHOSEN,
Who will lead the last war on the Elders
When the ashes have calmed on the horizon
A new sea will open up to swallow the remains
And the Great Farmer will know of love and comfort
Forever more

Tool bit

The term tool bit generally refers to a non-rotary cutting tool used in metal lathes, shapers, and planers. Such cutters are also often referred to by the set-phrase name of single-point cutting tool. The cutting edge is ground to suit a particular machining operation and may be resharpened or reshaped as needed. The ground tool bit is held rigidly by a tool holder while it is cutting.

Fluted countersink cutter

The fluted countersink cutter is used to provide a heavy chamfer in the entrance to a drilled hole. This may be required to allow the correct seating for a countersunk-head screw or to provide the lead in for a second machining operation such as tapping. Countersink cutters are manufactured with six common angles, which are 60°, 82°, 90°, 100°, 110°, or 120°, with the two most common of those being 82° and 90°. Countersunk-head screws that follow the Unified Thread Standard very often have an 82° angle, and screws that follow the ISO standard very often have a 90° angle. Throughout the aerospace industry, countersunk fasteners typically have an angle of 100°. The ideal countersink angle for holes tapped with 60° threads, when no countersunk fastener head will sit in the countersunk area, is often 60°; but often another angle is used if that is the cutter that is at hand, and the difference usually doesn't matter.

Cross-hole countersink cutter

A cross-hole countersink is a cone-shaped tool with a cutting edge provided by a hole that goes through the side of the cone (see picture at right). The intersection of the hole and cone form the cutting edge on the tool. The cone is not truly symmetrical as it is essential that the cone retreats away from the cutting edge as the tool rotates. If this does not occur the cutting edge will lack clearance and rub rather than bite into the material. This clearance is referred to as cutting relief.

These tools are best used as deburring tools, where the burr from a previous machining operation needs to be removed for cosmetic and safety reasons, however they may be used in softer materials (such as wood or plastic) to create a countersunk hole for a screw.

Diamond tools

A diamond tool is a cutting tool which contains diamond segments bonded to a base material, for cutting through a wide variety of non-ferrous materials. The segments are composed of diamond crystals and powder metal which form the bond, or 'matrix', of the segments.

When used for grinding, the bond is one of the prime factors when selecting which tool to use for cutting a specific material depending on how hard, or abrasive, the material is. The bond is what decides the rate at which the metallic powders wear down and expose new diamond crystals at the surface to maintain what would be considered a “sharp” edge.

Diamonds should not be used for cutting steel or iron, as carbon will dissolve into the workpiece and lead to tool wear and work hardening. Three other materials are used for cutting steels where diamond would be used: Cubic boron nitride (cBN, the second hardest material known), aluminum oxide, and silicon nitride tooling may be used.

For grinding or sawing hard materials, a diamond blade with a soft bond would be needed. This means the metallic powders in the segments (teeth) of the diamond blade wear fast enough to release old, dull crystals, exposing new diamond at the edges to continue cutting efficiently. Inversely, to cut a soft abrasive material like asphalt or freshly poured concrete, you would need to use a diamond blade with a hard bond so that the segments do not wear down prematurely and the blade is not put to waste. Diamond is especially suited to cut highly abrasive materials, such as ceramics.

The diamonds used in these tools are synthetic or natural industrial diamond of different grain sizes and shapes.

Woodturning

Woodturning is a form of woodworking that is used to create wooden objects on a lathe. Woodturning differs from most other forms of woodworking in that the wood is moving while a (relatively) stationary tool is used to cut and shape it. Many intricate shapes and designs can be made by turning wood.

There are two distinct methods of turning wood: spindle turning and faceplate turning. In spindle turning, the grain of the wood runs lengthwise, parallel to the bed of the lathe. In face plate turning, the grain of the wood runs perpendicular to the axis of rotation. Most bowls, platters and many vessels are face plate turned. Pens, furniture legs, spindles, and some vessels are spindle turned. It is the orientation of the grain that determines the method in use. Spindle turning is named for the type of product originally produced, while faceplate turning is named for an early method of attaching the material to the lathe.

The distinction between spindle turning and faceplate turning is due to the fibrous nature of the material. When wood is cut in such a way that the fiber being cut is not supported by the fiber below it, it tends to separate and tear. This "tearout" exhibits a rough, highly undesirable surface texture and greatly reduces the value of any product exhibiting it. The direction of cut is different in spindle turning and faceplate turning because cutting in the wrong direction can cause tearout. Spindle turning cuts are made from high points toward the axis on the outside of the piece, and from the axis toward the outside when hollowing. When faceplate turning, the opposite applies.

Cutting tool

In the context of metalworking, a cutting tool, is any tool that is used to remove metal from the workpiece by means of shear deformation. It frequently refers to as a tool bit. In order to perform a long time, cutting tools must be made of a material harder than the material which is to be cut, and the tool must be able to withstand the heat generated in the metal cutting process. Also, the tool must have a specific geometry, designed so that the cutting edge can contact the workpiece without the rest of the tool dragging on the surface of the piece part surface. The angle of the cutting face is also important as is the flute width, tool margin and tool material.
